When Losing Weight Feels Impossible

When Losing Weight Feels Impossible

You don't have enough fingers and toes to count the number of times you've tried and failed to lose weight.  Sound familiar?

At some point, you may have heard a disheartening statistic - that 95% of people who try to lose weight fail or lose the weight and regain it.  You might think back to your experience with weight loss and concur.  The problem is you still need to lose weight.

Either for your health or your wardrobe, you feel the need to try again.  So, you buy your weight loss shakes, get your protein powders, blow the dust off of your gym membership and try again.  You look up HIIT workouts and write a schedule that starts at 6am with a kale smoothie and a run.  You are motivated.  This will work, this time!

You get up and do that workout, and barely drink half of the smoothie because it tastes awful.  You feel accomplished and sneak a peek at the scale.  There is no change.  That night you go to sleep with your stomach growling because the salmon and broccoli didn't quite fill you up.

weight loss is hard

By day three, you are already exhausted from your routine, and can't wait for the week to end to see the progress you've made.  You step on the scale.  It says you're down a half a pound - or worse, up two pounds.  You want to throw the scale against the wall!  All that work for...NOTHING?!

Perhaps you didn't make it a week and ended up binging on chips and cake after the boiled chicken, plain rice and broccoli you planned on eating made you want to cry.

This failed attempt convinces you further that weight loss is impossible, or at least seems that way.  You think it must be possible, because you see success stories all over the internet.

So what does work?  How can people actually lose weight?  I would ask, what doesn't work?  Did the kale smoothies work, or the early morning workouts?

Why didn't they work?  They didn't work because they were too hard to do long term.  Weight loss doesn't happen overnight, and once you do lose the weight, you have to maintain the weight loss.

The key to weight loss is to make it easy enough to keep doing it.  Keep building on your habits, like drinking more water, adding tea to help fill your tummy, cooking meals at home, and soon you will make enough of a difference to see the change on the scale.

You might not lose weight by walking around the block and getting the small fries instead of the large fry.  What you are doing is building the endurance to do all the exercise you dreamed of being able to do.  You are training your stomach to get full on smaller portions, so that eventually you may not be able to finish that fast food meal even if you wanted to.  You are building a routine that includes exercise and paying attention to what you eat.

Weight loss is not impossible!  In fact, it can be really fun, and very tasty!
