Can I Get a Little Personal?
I'm not a personal trainer who has been thin my entire life. I know the struggle, I know how steep the climb is to lose the weight. Here's a little about my journey:
I struggled with weight most of my life from about the age of nine. I had a brief stint as a very, very (very) thin and fit person in my teens after a summer of intense dieting and exercise. It was what I thought was required to lose weight. Predictably, it wasn't sustainable, and I gained back some of the weight I had lost.
Years later, as marriage, having kids, illness, medication and stress took their toll on my body and emotions, I gained a lot of weight. It frightened me how rapidly I seemed to be gaining weight. I tried going on diets and exercise programs, but nothing lasted more than a few weeks. It was all too hard. Until.
Someone close to me died of diabetes and I suddenly had that internal motivation to do whatever I needed to do keep going on my weight loss journey. I ate the microwaved portioned out meals, I counted the calories, I went for the walks. And...nothing happened! I didn't lose any weight after six months of trying! My doctor said that was a feat in itself, because I wasn't gaining weight. That itself was a win. I had stopped the trend of the rapid weight gain I had been experiencing. It still felt like a failure. But then this amazing happened: I didn't quit.
I kept going, kept trying, kept exercising, kept praying, kept believing. Within a few years, I had gone from habitually eating Dunkin Donuts for breakfast to habitually eating egg whites for breakfast. I went from getting winded by doing a 5 minute line stepping dance to having energy after doing backflips and splits, and squatting and bench pressing hundreds of pounds.
I was fitter than most people I knew, and many thought I was a professional athlete. But there was still a problem. Even after losing over forty pounds of fat and gaining twenty pounds of muscle, I was still...kinda fat.
I knew that my work at the gym was already at a very high level. It was my diet that needed more work. I realized I was busting my behind at the gym to avoid the work I needed to do in the kitchen.
I would the hard thing. I would make my abs in the kitchen. I had a typical bro foods diet at the time - protein shakes, chicken, veg and rice, which was helpful in losing the 40lbs of fat and gaining all that muscle. I knew I needed to do this long term, so I would have to enjoy my food. I would take my cooking to the next level. I knew I was ready when I had people over for Thanksgiving, and there were eye rolls and moaning in pleasure at the food I had made. I knew I had the tools to finally lose the all the weight I needed to lose, to go the distance in the kitchen, to make low calorie foods taste delicious, to make weight loss easier and tastier.
I'm still learning. I'll be researching, interviewing experts, talking to chefs and trying things out that I'll share with you. I'm on this journey with you.
Enjoying the journey, deliciously. Easier. Tastier. One delicious meal at a time.
God bless you and good luck!
